The Industry That Forgot What It Means to Be Human

May 11, 2025

Real estate is one of the most human-centric professions on the planet—and yet it has become one of the most dehumanizing.

How did we get here?

Somewhere along the line, a simple question became the only question that mattered:
Did you get the deal?

And if the answer is no, then:

  • The strategy was wrong.

  • The script didn’t work.

  • You didn’t follow up enough.

  • You didn’t want it badly enough.

  • YOU are the problem.

Because in this warped, mechanized version of real estate, your value as a human being has been reduced to your production. Your worth has been shrunk down to a single metric—volume closed.

If you didn't extract a transaction, you failed.
If you didn't convert the lead, you're not committed.
If you didn’t get the listing, your mindset is broken.
If you’re not doubling your GCI year over year, what’s the point?

The obsession is not just unhealthy—it’s inhumane.

Production at All Costs

Open any industry newsletter. Listen to any top producer panel. Look at who gets celebrated on stage.

It's always the same story:
“I did $X million. I closed Y deals.”
And the crowd applauds like it's gospel.

But no one asks:

  • How many of those deals came with regret, resentment, or burnout?

  • How many relationships did you neglect on the way there?

  • How much of your peace did you trade for pressure?

  • How often did you have to pretend to be someone you're not just to stay relevant?

The industry doesn’t care.

Did you get the deal?
Cool. You’re a rockstar.
Didn't? You’re just not doing it right.

The Death of Humanity in a Human Business

We train agents to manipulate leads through “conversion funnels.”
We teach them to see every conversation as a means to an end.
We preach “follow up until they buy or die.”
We glorify cold outreach over deep connection.
We praise speed to lead and chase after clicks, but we never ask what kind of life this builds.

And the irony?

This is supposed to be a relationship business.

But the relationship is dead.
Replaced by a CRM.
Outsourced to a drip campaign.
Reduced to a number.

What passes as service is now just strategic positioning—not kindness, not care, not humanity.

The Silent Epidemic: Agents Who Are Numb Inside

Ask around. Privately.

You’ll hear the truth.

The vast majority of agents you admire:

  • Are exhausted.

  • Feel trapped in a cycle of “more, more, more.”

  • Haven’t experienced peace of mind in years.

  • Don’t know who they are without the next deal.

  • Can’t enjoy a vacation without guilt.

  • Feel like frauds because they hate the grind—but can’t say it out loud.

Because if you’re not hustling 24/7, you’re lazy.
If you prioritize your family, you lack ambition.
If you take a break, you’re slipping.
If you slow down, someone else will eat your lunch.

This is not a career.
It’s a cult.
Where productivity is God.
And your humanity is the sacrifice.

It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way

What if the real question was:

Did you show up today with integrity, empathy, and excellence?

What if we valued:

  • Joy over volume?

  • Peace over pressure?

  • Connection over conversion?

  • Sustainability over speed?

  • Service over scripts?

What if success wasn’t measured in closings, but in how you made people feel?
What if the agent who serves with heart, gives without agenda, and builds relationships for life was the one on stage?

What if being a good human being was the highest achievement?

Bring the Humanity Back

This isn’t soft.
This is strength.

Because it takes courage to say:

  • “I will not chase every lead.”

  • “I will not sacrifice my health for someone else's idea of success.”

  • “I will not dehumanize myself for the sake of numbers.”

  • “I will build a business that feeds my soul and honors the people I serve.”

This industry has lost its way—but you don’t have to.

You can choose a new standard.
You can choose depth over dopamine.
You can choose mastery over madness.
You can choose to redefine success on your own terms.

Let others play the game of more.
You play the game of meaning.

Because real estate is not about deals.
It’s about people.
And people are not numbers.

They never were.
And neither are you.
